Fixing STR#3009 as a two step process:

1) Undo r9867 (a fix for STR#2939) which made more changes than needed
       Doing this will also fix #3009.

    2) Apply just the small mod needed to fix STR#2939
       so that both #3009 and #2939 are solved.

This commit resolves (1).
Next commit will resolve (2).
